- Who is Rotersand ?
Rasc is cofounder and the creative
engine of “The Fair Sex” - one of the most
renowned “old school" ebm bands in Europe
and the U.S.
While co-producer of the band from the early 90's on,
Gun almost became an invisible member of TFS. Since
then, Gun and Rasc have repeatedly joined forces in
projects such as “1 am” (Music Research)
and “Warm” (Tetsuo Records) and now “Rotersand”.
Krischan joined Rotersand in autumn 2002. As Resident
DJ of clubs like “Planet ” in Bochum and
“Broadway” in Essen he released tracks and
mixes on Thee Blak Label, Radikal Fear, Force Inc and
React. His meaty club-background perfectly complements
Rasc’s solid ebm roots and Gun’s elaborate
“pop-approach”.
- Is Rotersand a side-project ?
Rotersand is not a side project of
any existing formation. It is genuinely independent
and for everyone involved it is the most demanding
and rewarding musical project ever. It is built on
our combined expertise and fuelled by our common passion
for music.
- How did Rotersand start ?
There was no decisive event that kicked
it off. We have been connected for quite some time,
personally and musically. Rather it was a process of
gradual consolidation, somewhat like interstellar matter
spiraling itself into new star.
- What is Rotersand about ?
Musically we combine several different
music styles. In our lyrics we often oppose images of
vigorous force with sentiments of melancholic weltschmerz.
The idea behind "Merging Oceans", for example,
is a man who sets out to sail the oceans in order to
experience the objective and the spiritual coherence
of his world. We were fascinated by this comforting
and inspiring vision.
"The Fire" describes an intense situation
where two lovers hold each other in a passionate yet
fatalistic embrace during an air raid. With its harsh
contrasts the song tries to illustrate the absurdity
of war - the utmost state of violence - that destroys
life and love alike.
- What is your message?
Like filmmakers we create pictures
and stories that come to life in the listener's perception.
We project our ideas and emotions onto a song's musical
mould. During this process it can happen that we are
carried away by our own imagination, ending up in an
almost sentimental outburst.. We like to create music,
lyrics and images for people that have retained the
capability and desire to discover oddities and contradictions
behind the obvious. But we also convey a certain sense
of irony that many fans can identify with. There is
no actual message or ideology in our work; we are no
missionaries. Our music mirrors our own mental and emotional
activity.
- What inspires you ?
Our lives themselves, as we are constantly
receiving and reflecting ideas, emotions and information.
But the major source of energy and inspiration is the
close relationship as friends and fellow musicians we
have been sharing for many years now.
- What are your plans for the future?
Play live as much as we can, release
albums and infect more people with our vision of and
our love for sophisticated electronic music.
